Have you ever talked with someone that you’ve looked up for a long time… you sit down at a normal, regular size table with regular size chairs in a room that has 4 walls and some windows and a door that opens and closes?
You drum up a heightened interaction as if in your meeting this person will begin to levitate into the air above you and cast down horrible things because you’re not intelligent enough or this must have been some sort of trick that the meeting was even taking place…
Other than this being a clear case of anxiety and imposter syndrome, it’s safe to say that you’ve probably over inflated someone along your journey to the point that you might not actually execute a meeting properly if/when a meeting does happen.
I was in a meeting the other day with someone who has a net worth well into the mid 9 figures. A mix of real estate, business success and investment success. This person has invested into household brand names and continues to work their tail off coming from nothing, just like me!
As I sat down and we looked at each other to begin the meeting a feeling of calm came over me. This person is just a normal human with a lot of the same experiences as me. They aren’t here to cast me down or spit me out, they are genuinely curious in what I am doing because when you’re a builder, you tend to find other builders and connect.
He was actually interested in what I had to say and was interested in my thoughts.
The difference is this person has worked tirelessly for longer than me and probably ate more shit than I have, I can almost guarantee that actually.
The meeting was encouraging because even though I didn’t walk away with a check - which honestly wasn’t the intention - I walked away with a contact that was curious about deals that I am going to put together. A true member of the syndicate with a deep pocket book and an even deeper well of experience.
It’s not always what you want
Sometimes we want the moon and the stars and the sun and all the planets while we are at it but life, rarely, works like that.
A wise person once told me that you can’t have the finish line without running the race.
These are simple words but there is a depth of truth in them.
We set a goal - We outline what’s required to hit the goal - Execute
Except, it’s not always that easy. Sometimes your oven goes out randomly or your car dies and you’re forced to figure out how to solve unwanted problems while you still try to remain locked in to the task at hand.
Put yourself in the position to win and prepare for rain because it’s going to come but if you have an umbrella, it’s an inconvenience and not a disaster.
NEW PITCHES
In the last week I have received some really interesting pitch decks for review. I’ve been digging in and talking with founders to learn more about their businesses and ideas.
I’m game to continue reviewing and learning but we aren’t deploying capital yet because our Syndicate is not at the number it needs to be.
My target is 50 Syndicate members and we are still sitting right at 15. I have a handful of meetings this week and a bunch of invites that went out last week, so I extremely confident we will get there.
